The case is made as a "swing out" - to open you unscrew and remove the front bezel which holds the crystal, pull the stem up into the hand setting position, and hinge the movement up - it is held in a metal ring - you can see in the photo below the square stem which fits into the movement
 
          The case is not signed as to what it is made of, however I am certain that is is some type of nickel alloy It is a solid metal case that will take a lot of abuse, and will wear for a very long time, much longer than gold, gold filled or silver   It is completely plain, in excellent condition, and has just been polished to a high shine   It is nickel in color - since it is so shiny it reflects like a mirror everything around it making it difficult to tell from the photos what color it is exactly - you can see mostly my white light reflectors in the photos of the back
