Waltham Vanguard 18 size 23 jewel with winding indicator
Item WW367
Price $1950

This is an 18 size with an outer case diameter of 54mm(2.1 inches)

Excellent bold numbered double sunk white porcelain enamel dial

Has glass crystal

It is running well with good motion and keeping good time as it has been professionally cleaned and oiled

The movement is signed "Vanguard, Waltham Mass., 23 jewels, adjusted 5 positions" and has raised gold jewel settings, gold timing screws on the balance, and highly polished steel surfaces

This 18 size model 1892 had much lower production with winding indicators than did the smaller 16 size models

It fills all of the requirements of a railroad watch in any era

It is lever setting to set the hands- that is, there is a little lever at the edge of the dial at about the 11:00 position that you pull out away from the dial, at which time if you turn the winding crown the hands will move.  Push it back in, and now turning the winding crown will again wind the watch.  This lever setting system was required on all railroad grade watches so that you would not accidentally change the time when you were winding the watch

Note that the mechanism that drives the winding indicator is where the set lever normally would be, so the set lever is on the opposite side on the winding indicator models.

You can see the lever in the out position at the 11:00 in the photo above

The case is signed "Warranted 25 years", it is gold filled

It is completely plain with no engravings at all, in excellent condition, and has just been polished to a high shine
It is gold in color - since it is so shiny it reflects like a mirror everything around it making it difficult to tell from the photos what color it is exactly - you can see mostly my white light reflectors in the photos of the back

As you often find with railroad grade watches, this case is probably not the original one - railroad watches were working watches and often have been through several cases in their lifetimes

Manufacturer's movement serial number dates this watch to about the year 1908
